Amorim to Address Garnacho's Reaction After Substitution in Manchester United's Win

Posted : 27 February 2025

Ruben Amorim plans to discuss Alejandro Garnacho’s reaction to his substitution during Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Ipswich. Garnacho was taken off late in the first half following Patrick Dorgu’s red card, as Amorim introduced Noussair Mazraoui to reinforce the defense.

Rather than joining his teammates on the bench, the 20-year-old walked straight down the touchline to the dressing room, a move that drew boos from United fans. Garnacho later posted an Instagram story showing himself looking dejected in the rain, adding to the controversy.

Amorim downplayed Garnacho’s behavior, joking about the cold weather while explaining his tactical decision. He acknowledged that removing a player with Garnacho’s pace was risky but believed the team had control of the game at that point.

The Portuguese manager also addressed concerns about a possible rift, referencing Marcus Rashford’s departure to Aston Villa after previous disciplinary issues. While Amorim confirmed he would speak with Garnacho, he refrained from drawing direct comparisons to Rashford, stating he would provide further details in a future press conference.

Despite the drama, Amorim refused to blame Dorgu for his costly error that led to Ipswich’s opening goal. A mix-up between Dorgu and goalkeeper Andre Onana allowed Jaden Philogene to score early, putting United on the back foot.

However, an own goal from Sam Morsy and a Matthijs de Ligt strike turned the game around before Dorgu’s dismissal for a foul on Omari Hutchinson. Ipswich equalized just before halftime through another Philogene effort, but Harry Maguire’s header early in the second half secured United’s victory.

Amorim admitted the opening minutes had an air of déjà vu, given United’s recent struggles, but praised his team’s resilience. He emphasized that football can be unpredictable and commended his players for battling through adversity.

Regarding Dorgu’s red card, Amorim defended the young defender, insisting that his intentions were not malicious. The win marked only Amorim’s fifth league victory since taking charge at Old Trafford, as he continues to navigate a challenging start to his tenure.
