Amorim Stresses Smarter Transfers as Key to Manchester United's Revival

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has emphasized the importance of smarter recruitment to reverse the club's ongoing struggles. Since taking over in November, he has been unable to lift the team beyond 15th place in the Premier League, despite the club spending over £600 million on new signings under Erik ten Hag.

 

Limited funds in the January transfer window left Amorim with only one signing, Danish defender Patrick Dorgu, as financial constraints at Old Trafford continue to tighten. On Monday, the club announced up to 200 job cuts as part of a restructuring effort, which Amorim admitted was a consequence of the team's underwhelming performances in recent seasons.

 

Amorim acknowledged that Manchester United's past transfer missteps have significantly contributed to their decline. He stressed that improving recruitment is crucial, as better squad building will enhance the team's ability to compete at a higher level.

 

While he understands that words alone will not convince fans and staff of his ability to turn things around, he remains committed to proving himself through action. The former Sporting Lisbon coach reiterated the need for careful investment in new players to avoid costly errors that have plagued the club’s recent transfer dealings.

 

One such example is the club’s £100 million expenditure on strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, who have struggled to justify their price tags. Hojlund, in particular, has scored only twice in the Premier League this season, with his last goal in any competition dating back to December.

 

Amorim, however, defended the Danish forward, arguing that the team's overall lack of creativity has hindered his performance. He believes that if United improve their style of play and provide better service, Hojlund will have more opportunities to showcase his potential and deliver in front of goal.
