Amorim says Manchester United Must Fight for Survival After Defeat to Newcastle

Ruben Amorim acknowledged that Manchester United is now in a battle for Premier League survival after a 2-0 loss to Newcastle left them in 14th place in the table at the close of 2024. United are just seven points above the relegation zone and have struggled since Amorim took over last month, suffering a third consecutive home league defeat for the first time since 1979. Goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton within the first 19 minutes sealed the loss.

 

Amorim, reflecting on the team's situation, emphasized the need for a fight, stating that this is one of the most challenging moments in the club's history. He urged his players to face the adversity with honesty and fight for points in the upcoming matches. United's next challenges include a tough away trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool and an FA Cup match against Arsenal, with further pressure mounting on Amorim's leadership.

 

The manager has faced criticism for sticking with his preferred 3-4-3 formation since his arrival from Sporting Lisbon, where he had success, winning two Portuguese league titles. In a bid to address United's poor start, Amorim substituted Joshua Zirkzee for Kobbie Mainoo after just 33 minutes. Though the team improved after the change, the damage was already done, and Amorim's tactical decisions continue to raise questions.

 

Despite the criticism, Amorim remains steadfast in his approach, refusing to alter his tactics. He stated that he would continue with his ideas, even if it cost him his job, stressing that he would not go back on his methods. With only a few training sessions under his belt, he is determined to see his vision through, believing that perseverance is the key to overcoming the team's current struggles.
