Amorim Dismisses 'Fergie Time' Talk as United Edge Leicester in FA Cup Thriller

Posted : 08 February 2025

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim praised his team’s belief after their dramatic late winner against Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round but dismissed comparisons to "Fergie time." The victory brought back memories of Sir Alex Ferguson’s era, when United was known for their last-minute heroics.

However, Amorim was more concerned about his team’s lackluster first-half display, emphasizing the need for significant improvement in possession and overall energy. Speaking to ITV, he acknowledged that while the result was positive, the performance left much to be desired.

United struggled early on, failing to register a shot on target in the first half at Old Trafford for the third time this season. Leicester capitalized before halftime when Wilfred Ndidi’s shot was parried by André Onana, allowing Bobby De Cordova-Reid to nod in the rebound.

Amorim admitted that his side lacked intensity, particularly in the opening half, but showed more urgency after the break. Joshua Zirkzee’s strike brought United level in the second half before Harry Maguire’s stoppage-time header from Bruno Fernandes’ free kick sealed the win.

Despite the late triumph, Amorim stressed that his team must address both minor and major issues in their gameplay. He acknowledged his responsibility for United’s inconsistent form and emphasized the need to study their shortcomings ahead of upcoming matches.

The coach also highlighted the importance of better ball control and decision-making under pressure. He remains determined to improve performances, particularly at Old Trafford, where his team has struggled for consistency this season.

Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy expressed frustration over the defeat, pointing to Maguire’s positioning during the winning goal. He argued that the defender was half a meter offside when the free kick was taken and insisted Leicester deserved a chance to take the game to extra time.

Van Nistelrooy lamented the decision, stating that such calls are difficult to accept at this level. With VAR set to be introduced in the FA Cup from the fifth round onward, future contentious decisions may receive closer scrutiny.
