Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has expressed deep frustration with his team's performance, suggesting that they may be "maybe the worst" in the club's 147-year history. Following a 3-1 loss to Brighton, which marked their fourth defeat in their last five Premier League games at home, Amorim didn't hold back in his assessment.
United, under Amorim's leadership since November, have earned just 11 points from 11 league games, leaving them in 13th place—10 points clear of relegation but still trailing 10th-placed Fulham by seven points.
Amorim acknowledged the difficult position the team finds itself in, stating, "In the past 10 games in Premier League, we won two. Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me."
He went on to admit that since his arrival, the team has performed worse than under his predecessor, Erik ten Hag, and called for change, admitting that acknowledging the team's poor state was necessary. "We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United," he said, adding a blunt remark for the media: "Here you go: your headlines."
Despite equalizing through a Bruno Fernandes penalty after going 1-0 down, United were outplayed by Brighton, who regained the lead with Kaoru Mitoma's goal. A catastrophic error by goalkeeper Andre Onana, which led to Georginio Rutter scoring Brighton's third, compounded United’s misery.
Amorim's harsh words about his team's performance come amidst alarming statistics that underline their struggles this season. The loss to Brighton marked their sixth home defeat of the season, a record the club hasn't seen since the 1893-94 season.
Although Amorim's comments were strong, the statistics show that United's performance is historically poor, though not the absolute worst. Only 13 previous United teams have had fewer points at this stage of the season, with the last instance occurring in 1986-87. This season has seen the club lose 10 of their 22 Premier League matches, their highest defeat tally at this point in a league campaign since 1989-90.
Despite their struggles, relegation remains unlikely, but Amorim’s comments reflect a desperate need for change. Football pundit Leon Osman highlighted the team's expensive squad, noting that Amorim’s statement was bold but probably accurate.
