Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum has submitted his resignation to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) due to personal reasons. Waldrum, who assumed the role in 2020 following the departure of Thomas Dennerby, faced significant challenges from the start. His initial period saw the Super Falcons finish in fourth place at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, a result that raised questions about his future.
Despite these concerns, the NFF chose to retain Waldrum’s services. He later guided the Super Falcons to a commendable round of 16 finish at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, showing improvement and gaining confidence in his tenure. His coaching was hoped to continue the positive trajectory, but the recent 2024 Olympic campaign, where the team did not advance beyond the group stage, marked a setback.
It seems now that Waldrum’s tenure with the Super Falcons is coming to an end. The American coach has formally resigned from his position, citing personal reasons for his decision.
In a letter shared by OgaNla media, Waldrum disclosed that his wife has been dealing with health issues, which has prompted him to step down from his coaching role to provide her with the necessary support and care.
As of this report, the NFF has not yet officially confirmed Waldrum’s resignation. An official statement from the federation is anticipated in the near future to address the situation and provide further details.
Waldrum’s departure marks the end of a challenging yet impactful period with the Super Falcons. His contributions to Nigerian women’s football, despite the difficulties, will be remembered as he transitions to focus on his family’s needs.
