Amad Diallo's Late Equalizer Earns Manchester United a Thrilling Draw Against Liverpool

Posted : 05 January 2025

Amad Diallo struck a late equalizer as Manchester United earned a dramatic 2-2 draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. Despite a strong performance, it seemed Ruben Amorim’s United might leave empty-handed until Diallo’s composed finish in the 80th minute salvaged a point. The result marked a surprising turn of events given United's recent struggles and Liverpool's dominance in the league.

United had initially taken the lead in the 52nd minute when Lisandro Martinez unleashed a thunderous shot from a tight angle, giving Alisson no chance. However, Liverpool responded swiftly, with Cody Gakpo curling in a stunning equalizer just seven minutes later.

The hosts then surged ahead through Mohamed Salah, who converted a penalty following a VAR review of Matthijs de Ligt’s handball. United, however, refused to back down, and substitute Alejandro Garnacho set up Diallo for a clinical finish to restore parity.

The final stages of the match were a frantic affair, with both sides pushing for a winner. United's Harry Maguire missed a golden opportunity in the dying moments, skying a shot over the bar with the last kick of the game.

Despite the missed chance, United fans left Anfield encouraged by their team’s spirited display, which hinted at potential improvement in a difficult season. Liverpool, meanwhile, remained at the top of the table with 46 points from 19 games, maintaining a comfortable six-point lead over Arsenal with a game in hand.

This hard-fought draw was a significant morale boost for United, who had suffered five defeats in their last six league matches, raising concerns about relegation. Under Amorim's guidance, United displayed remarkable resilience, going toe-to-toe with a Liverpool side that had previously crushed them 7-0 in March 2023.

While Liverpool's Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister threatened early, United’s Andre Onana made crucial saves, and their defense stood firm. United’s counterattacking style also exposed Liverpool’s high line, with opportunities falling to Diogo Dalot, Rasmus Højlund, and Diallo, showcasing a renewed fighting spirit.
