Amad Diallo delivered a remarkable 12-minute hat-trick to secure a 3-1 victory for Manchester United over Southampton on Thursday, rescuing them from a potential fourth consecutive league defeat. Ruben Amorim's side had been struggling but Diallo turned the match in United’s favor at a jubilant Old Trafford, leveling the score in the 82nd minute before scoring two more to seal the win in stoppage time.
Southampton had taken the lead through a Manuel Ugarte own goal late in the first half after a poor clearance following a corner. Despite their struggles this season, the visitors created numerous chances and were the better side for much of the first half, with Tyler Dibling and Mateus Fernandes both being denied by United goalkeeper Andre Onana, who made a series of impressive saves.
United had not started strongly, missing opportunities including a glaring miss from Alejandro Garnacho after a flowing team move. However, they began to build momentum after the break, with Amorim making changes, including bringing on Antony, but it was Diallo’s clinical performance in the final minutes that turned the tide. His first goal came from a blocked shot that he confidently finished, and his second came following a deft pass from Christian Eriksen and a defensive mistake from Southampton.
The win lifted Manchester United to 12th place in the table, providing a much-needed morale boost after a string of poor results. Southampton, however, remains in trouble, sitting 10 points adrift of safety, as they continue to struggle in their battle to avoid finishing the season as the worst team in Premier League history.
