Alonso welcomes Boniface: "He'll train tomorrow" after Al-Nassr deal falls through

Posted : 30 January 2025

Xabi Alonso, the manager of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, has confirmed that Victor Okoh Boniface will resume training immediately after his anticipated transfer to Al-Nassr fell through. This news brings relief to Leverkusen fans, who eagerly await the return of their key striker.

Boniface, a Nigerian international, made a significant impact for Die Werkself upon joining the club in the summer of 2023. His contributions were instrumental in their successful campaign, culminating in a local double during his debut season.  He quickly became a fan favorite and a crucial part of Alonso's squad.

The current season, however, has presented some challenges for the young striker.  He experienced a period of goal-scoring drought at the beginning of the campaign.  Just as he seemed to be finding his form again, he suffered a thigh injury in November, which has sidelined him for an extended period. This unfortunate injury disrupted his progress and prevented him from building on his initial success.

Despite his injury and his recent contract extension with Leverkusen until 2029, Boniface remained a target for other clubs. Al-Nassr, the Saudi Pro League team, expressed strong interest in acquiring the former Union Saint-Gilloise striker, reportedly offering him substantial wages.

However, the proposed transfer to Al-Nassr ultimately fell through. The Saudi club decided to pursue other options and secured the signing of Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran for a significant transfer fee. This development ended any potential move for Boniface, confirming his immediate future at Bayer Leverkusen.

Following Leverkusen’s recent victory over Sparta Prague, Alonso addressed the situation surrounding Boniface. He expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that he believes Boniface is comfortable at the club and that the failed transfer has not caused him significant stress.  Alonso confirmed that Boniface would return to training the following day.

Boniface's return to training is a welcome boost for Leverkusen as they aim to close the gap on Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga table.  His goal-scoring ability and presence on the field will be valuable assets for the team as they continue their campaign.  The club will be hoping that he can quickly regain his form and contribute to their success in the latter part of the season.
