Alex Iwobi breaks records, shines in Fulham resurgence

Posted : 08 April 2025

Alex Iwobi played a pivotal role as Fulham defeated Liverpool 3-2 at Craven Cottage, breaking the Reds' 26-match unbeaten run. The Nigerian international scored a goal and provided an assist during a dazzling five-minute period in the second half, leaving Liverpool struggling to mount a comeback.

Despite Mohamed Salah's excellent season, Iwobi outshone the Egyptian with a performance that earned him plaudits. The two players have faced off before in Merseyside derbies, but this time it was Iwobi who stole the spotlight, marking his best display since scoring twice against West Ham United in January.

Iwobi's goal and assist helped him make history, becoming the first Nigerian player to record 30 goals and 30 assists in the Premier League. Nwankwo Kanu, with 29 assists and 54 goals, was previously the leading Nigerian player in Premier League assists, but Iwobi is now catching up to the legends.

Though still behind Aiyegbeni Yakubu's remarkable 121 goal contributions, Iwobi’s achievement is significant. His assist came from a well-executed, albeit unorthodox, pass that allowed Rodrigo Muniz to score, extending Fulham’s lead.

As the nephew of legendary Jay-Jay Okocha, Iwobi has always faced comparisons to his famous relative. While not as flamboyant as his uncle, Iwobi has developed into a more selfless and intelligent player, winning over fans with his work ethic and playmaking ability, especially during his time at Everton and now at Fulham.

Iwobi has been Fulham’s most productive player this season, with 13 direct goal contributions so far. His form has been a key factor in Fulham’s success this year, surpassing his previous best season tally of nine goal contributions at both Arsenal and Everton.

In addition to his impressive goal tally, Iwobi's contributions in terms of shots per game have increased, with 1.8 shots per game this season, the highest of his Premier League career. His all-around performance against Liverpool starkly contrasted Mohamed Salah, who has been struggling in recent weeks, failing to find his usual form.

Salah's decline in form has raised concerns at Liverpool, with former striker John Aldridge commenting on his lack of impact in recent games. With Liverpool still on track to secure the league title, the team will need to regain momentum, especially as they approach the business end of the season.
