Aleksey Miranchuk Scores Late to Secure 2-2 Draw for Atlanta Against Inter Miami

Posted : 19 September 2024

Aleksey Miranchuk scored a dramatic late goal to secure a 2-2 draw for Atlanta against Inter Miami in their Major League Soccer match on Wednesday. Lionel Messi, making a late appearance as a substitute, was unable to change the outcome for Miami, who were initially leading 2-1 thanks to goals from David Ruiz and Leonardo Campana. Despite Messi's previous strong performance against Philadelphia, coach Gerardo Martino opted to rest him and other key players like Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba to avoid overloading them during a busy schedule.

Messi entered the game in the 61st minute and nearly clinched the victory with an angled shot in the 83rd, but his attempt was thwarted by Atlanta’s goalkeeper Brad Guzan. Miranchuk, who joined Atlanta from Atalanta in late July, made his mark just a minute later with a superb left-footed strike from outside the box to level the score. Miami had taken the lead with Ruiz’s first-half goal, which came after he capitalized on a pass from Franco Negri.

Atlanta equalized in the 56th minute with a header from Saba Lobzhanidze, which deflected off a defender and slipped past Miami’s goalkeeper Drake Callender. Campana then restored Miami’s lead with a free kick in the 59th minute, marking his 30th goal for the club and surpassing Gonzalo Higuain as their all-time leading scorer. Despite Messi, Suarez, and Alba coming on as substitutes, Miami struggled to hold their advantage.

Assistant coach Javier Morales, filling in for Martino who was serving a suspension, acknowledged the challenges of playing at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He praised the team’s first-half performance and their ability to respond after Atlanta’s equalizer, although he noted the difficulties of managing the game amid Atlanta’s home advantage and enthusiastic crowd. Despite dropping points, Miami remains in a strong position for the Supporters' Shield and leads the Eastern Conference by eight points, with Cincinnati close behind after their 2-1 win over Minnesota.
