Akwa Utd FC seeks first away point in Pantami Stadium
Posted : 11 November 2023
Barely five months after securing an away victory over Gombe United at the Pantami Stadium on the final day of the 2022-23 Nigeria Premier Football League season, Akwa United is returning to the same venue on Sunday to face Doma United in the opening game of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 8 on Saturday.
Doma United and the 2021 league champions, Akwa United, will meet in the NPFL for the first time in their history since the Gombe-based club earned promotion to the top flight last season. Both teams were in different groups during the 2022-23 abridged league season.
The home side has recorded two wins, two draws, and suffered two defeats in their first six games of the current season, scoring seven times while conceding five goals. They are currently on eight points and occupy the 12th position in the league standings.
The Promise Keepers are one point behind and four places behind their hosts after securing one win, four draws, and enduring two defeats in the seven games played so far this season.
They have scored six goals and conceded eight, with five of their six goals coming from away matches.
Akwa United has not lost a league game at the Pantami Stadium in nine years against two different clubs (Gombe United and Adamawa United) in their last five visits to Gombe.
Coach Fatai Osho's team earned a valuable point in Benin against Bendel Insurance in their previous away game and are in dire need of three points to improve their position on the league table.
Akwa United fans are hopeful that the "miracle" at the Pantami Stadium will continue for their team on Saturday, while Coach Fatai expects his players to be at their best to put up a fight against Doma United, who remain unbeaten in their two home games (2-0 against Bayelsa United and 0-0 against Bendel Insurance) during which they scored twice.
Stand-in captain David Philip, who has already scored one goal this season, will lead his teammates into the battle for three points, knowing that a victory will propel them into the top half of the table.
