Akwa Utd FC produces befitting win over borderless Remo Stars

Akwa United FC shrugged off their past disappointing matches in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with an audacious 3-2 win over the visiting league winners, Remo Stars, on Sunday.

The Match Day 9 result was unexpected, as pundits had given clear odds of Remo Stars FC having an overriding win over the home team, Akwa United.

Perhaps what worked much for the Fatai Osho-tutored team was the fact that Remo Stars had earlier enjoyed the tutelage of Osho when he coached the team.

The Promise Keepers were stunned in the 15th minute as Sikiru Alimi headed Remo Stars into the lead.

Not to be outdone, The Promise Keepers produced an equalizer in the 23rd minute as Seyi Oguntayo found space outside the box and fired a ferocious strike at goal, but his effort was deflected out for a corner.

The resultant corner kick, however, produced the needed succor as Akintunde Bala whipped the ball in from the right, while Dare Ojo headed the ball into the net to level the scores at 1-1.

In order to keep the momentum, The Promise Keepers added another three minutes later, in the 26th minute, as Uche Collins once again received a low pass and shot straight into the net from outside the box. His first goal of the season came on his birthday!

Akwa United FC added the third goal after the first-half break in the 62nd minute as Rilwan Sadiq scored with his first touch after coming on as a substitute. He calmly tucked in Akintunde Bala's right-footed cross to make it 3-1.

Remo Stars' quest for goals was almost quenched as Aniekeme Okon pulled one back for Remo Stars in the 78th minute, making the scoreline 3-2.

Akwa United FC, however, sealed the backline to salvage a 3-2 win, the second one of the 2023/2024 season.

Akwa United FC now has two wins, four draws, and two losses, occupying 17th place.
