Akwa United continued their resurgence in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) during the Match Day 17 fixtures played at Eket Stadium, securing a decisive 3-1 win over Abia Warriors.
The scoreline marked the highest number of goals recorded so far by the 2023/2024 NPFL strugglers, and the much-needed points also lifted them out of the relegation zone after spending 16 weeks in a precarious position.
The managerless Akwa United, with the victory, affirmed their dominance over their neighbors from Umuahia, coming from behind to secure a 3-1 win at the Eket Township Stadium.
Abia Warriors' goal poacher, Samson Obi, opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a fine finish.
The Promise Keepers, however, leveled the score in the 40th minute as Mubarak Said fired a well-placed shot into the net from close range, with an assist from Osoba Kabir.
Akwa United FC made it two in quick succession, as two minutes later, in the 42nd minute, David Philip executed a brilliant solo run forward, dribbling past his markers before scoring a superb goal to put his side in the lead.
Hadi Mohammed beautifully scored for the Promise Keepers, putting the icing on the cake for his team in the 55th minute. The remaining minutes of the game saw both teams looking to capitalize on each other's mistakes for a goal.
Akwa United now occupies the 16th position, one point ahead of the relegation zone.
