Former Arsenal forward Chuba Akpom is expected to be included in the matchday squad on Thursday when Ajax Amsterdam takes on Brighton & Hove in the Europa League, marking his return to the American Express Community Stadium after nearly 6 and a half years since his last game for the Seagulls.
Akpom had previously joined Brighton & Hove on loan from Arsenal during the latter half of the 2016-2017 season, aiming to gain more first-team experience. Despite his limited starting appearances, his contribution helped Brighton secure promotion to the Premier League, and his final game for the Seagulls was in April 2017 against Norwich City.
While Akpom may not have fully met expectations during his time at the Amex Stadium, he displayed his abilities in his last season with Middlesbrough. He clinched the Championship Golden Boot with 28 goals in 38 matches and received the inaugural PFA Championship Players' Player of the Year Award, leading to a transfer to Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam.
In the current Europa League group stage, Ajax has drawn twice, and Akpom has been introduced from the bench in both games.
