Ahead of 2024/2025 Season: NNL approves September AGM

Posted : 06 September 2024

The Board of Nigeria’s second-tier League (NNL) has confirmed that the upcoming 2024/2025 league season will feature an equal number of teams across its various conferences. This decision is expected to ensure a more balanced and competitive league, providing each conference with an equal opportunity for success. By standardizing the number of teams, the NNL aims to foster fair play, increase excitement for fans, and encourage growth at the grassroots level of Nigerian football. The board is committed to making structural improvements that will positively impact the league's overall competitiveness.

This resolution was one of several critical decisions made during a recent virtual board meeting that was well-attended by key stakeholders. The virtual meeting allowed board members from different regions to engage in discussions and make important decisions despite the challenges of distance. The move toward using technology for such meetings reflects the NNL's forward-thinking approach to governance and management, prioritizing efficiency and inclusivity. The board noted that the ability to hold effective virtual meetings would allow for greater participation in decision-making processes, ensuring that every voice is heard.

Another significant outcome of the virtual meeting was the decision to hold the Annual General Meeting (AGM) later this month. The AGM is a crucial event for the league, as it provides an opportunity for board members, club owners, and stakeholders to discuss the state of the league, review financial reports, and set objectives for the coming season. This year's AGM is particularly important, given the upcoming changes to the league structure and the emphasis on maintaining competitive balance. The board members are eager to finalize preparations for the AGM, which will help chart the league's direction for the future.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the NNL board announced that the date and venue of the AGM would be disclosed soon. The decision to delay the announcement was made to ensure that all logistical arrangements are in place, allowing for a smooth and productive meeting. The board reassured stakeholders that they are working diligently to secure a suitable venue and finalize the details. The AGM will serve as a platform for discussing key issues such as sponsorship, player development, and the future of the league, making it a pivotal event in the NNL calendar.

The NNL board took the opportunity to commend the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for its continued support of the league. Under the leadership of Ibrahim Musa Gusau, the NFF has been instrumental in creating a conducive environment for football development in Nigeria. The board expressed its gratitude for the NFF’s role in ensuring that the league has the necessary resources to thrive. This collaborative relationship between the NNL and the NFF is seen as vital to the success of Nigerian football at all levels, from grassroots development to the national stage.

In addition to praising the NFF's efforts, the NNL board also expressed its unwavering confidence in the NFF's ability to guide the Super Eagles toward qualification for major international tournaments. With the 2025 African Cup of Nations and the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, the board emphasized the importance of unified support for the national team. They believe that the NFF’s strategic approach and focus on nurturing talent will ensure that Nigeria remains competitive on the global stage. The board also urged fans and stakeholders to rally behind the Super Eagles as they prepare for these significant challenges.

NNL board remains committed to the continuous improvement of the league, with a focus on creating a competitive and sustainable football environment. The decisions made during the virtual board meeting reflect their dedication to enhancing the quality of the league and ensuring its long-term success. With equal teams in the conferences, strong leadership from the NFF, and a clear vision for the future, the NNL is poised for a successful 2024/2025 season and beyond.
