Ahead of 2023/2024 season: We need to be more resilient, says Abia Warriors Coach, Onu

Posted : 02 July 2023
Abia Warriors technical helmsman, Erasmus Onu, has unequivocally attributed the team’s 4th finish in the final standings of the Abridged 2022/2023 NPFL table to general support his team received from all, including players and his technical crew.

Abia Warriors featured in Group B of the Abridged NPFL season, missing the Super 6 qualification by the whiskers.

"I’m proud of the players. I’m pleased with the coaches and the support staff.

"They were the reason we didn’t have to struggle against relegation as had been the case in the past.

"We worked really hard together, to ensure that we achieved that feat. If you check the club’s records in the last six seasons or there about, they’ve had to struggle against relegation till the final match of the season.

"But this time, it wasn’t so and I’m happy and give kudos, especially to the players and I commend my technical staff."

Onu added: "I detest being asked by club officials why I didn’t feature this or that player. They say he’s good and has been doing well in training.

"If you know those telling you that they are right, why not give them the job (of coaching) to do?

"I believe as the coach, I’m in charge. I should be the one to answer questions if the team doesn’t perform. And as such, I deserve free hand to operate."

Onu recalled his previous romance with Abia Warriors, having steered the team’s technical ship in 2006 and 2009.

"In 2006, I started the season with the team and we finished second position. Then in 2009, I was called back when the team was in 14th position out of 16 teams, but I worked hard enough as we ended the season on 3rd position."

Onu is now in the second and final year of his two-year contract with Abia Warriors and he says the coming season holds high prospect for the club.

"We finished 4th last season, now we’re going in for something better. We’ve tested the waters and we will see what happens," he said.

"Now we’ve a new chairman who has been with the club and knows the system. He is understanding and primed for success.

"He has started well, go to the Umuahia Stadium and see things for yourself. I think we’ll get there," Onu said.

Onu had previously had managerial spells at ABS Ilorin FC, Niger Tornadoes, Heartland FC amongst others before rejoining Abia Warriors last term.
