Aghehowa replaces Omorodion – Spanish-Nigerian striker explains jersey change

Samu Omorodion, a Nigerian-eligible striker who currently plays for Portugal's FC Porto, recently shared why he chose to change his surname on his jersey. The 20-year-old forward, born in Mellila, Spain to Nigerian parents, has made a thoughtful decision to reflect a deeper personal connection on his jersey.


After representing Spain in the Paris 2024 Olympics, where his team won gold alongside young talents like Barca’s Pau Cubarsi and Fermin Lopez, Samu's career trajectory took an unexpected turn. Although he had a deal lined up with Chelsea, the move to the English club did not materialize, even after passing his medical tests.

Instead, Samu signed with FC Porto, where he has been making a strong impact on the field. His performances under coach Sérgio Conceição have been remarkable, with Samu netting eleven goals in just twelve matches across various competitions this season, a testament to his growing form.


In an unusual step for many professional players, Samu decided to switch his jersey name from "Omorodion" to "Aghehowa," using his mother’s surname. The name change is meant to honor the sacrifices and resilience his mother demonstrated in raising him, a sentiment that Samu has chosen to carry onto the field.


Samu shared in an interview with Porto’s *Revista Dragões* magazine that his decision was rooted in a deep gratitude for his mother’s efforts. “My mother’s sacrifices are priceless. I want to pay homage to her by using her surname,” he expressed, emphasizing his desire to be recognized through her family name, “Aghehowa,” rather than his father’s surname.


While eligible to play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Samu’s international career appears more aligned with Spain’s national team. His participation in the Olympics and other Spanish youth teams indicates a continued commitment to Spain, though his Nigerian heritage remains a proud part of his identity.


Samu’s gesture highlights a meaningful way for athletes to express personal values and family connections, blending both his sporting achievements and his dedication to family.
