Agbonlahor advises Chelsea against Jackson, Nkunku; favors Osimhen

Posted : 13 July 2023
Retired English footballer of Nigerian heritage, Gabby Agbonlahor, has expressed his belief that Chelsea should reinforce their attacking options by acquiring Victor Osimhen, despite the recent signings of Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku from Villarreal and RB Leipzig, respectively, in the summer transfer window.

Agbonlahor, a legendary figure at Aston Villa, emphasized that Chelsea's chances of securing a Champions League position in the upcoming season would be diminished if they fail to sign a marquee center forward like Osimhen.

Chelsea experienced a subpar season in 2022-2023, finishing 12th in the Premier League and tallying only 38 goals throughout the campaign.

To address their offensive deficiencies, the club has been linked with Osimhen, one of the top strikers in Europe's major leagues.

However, negotiations may face obstacles due to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis valuing Osimhen at 200 million euros.

While acknowledging that Osimhen's price tag may be excessive, Agbonlahor still believes that the Nigerian forward would enhance the Chelsea squad.

He stated, "They still need a proper striker. I liked Romelu Lukaku when he was playing at Everton. It is what a lot of teams need right out in the league as well. Victor Osimhen would be good, but I think they are talking around £170m for him, which is too much. But I do feel that Chelsea need more as every team is improving. Villa will be there next season, so will Brighton, so it will be harder for Chelsea to break into the top four, and that’s the minimum for Chelsea with the amount of money they spent."

Osimhen has achieved an impressive record of 97 goals in a combined total of 175 appearances for Sporting Charleroi, Lille, and Napoli.

Additionally, he has registered 17 goals for the Nigerian national team in 26 appearances, showcasing his prowess at both the club and international levels.
