Bendel Insurance Football Club shrugged off their burdens on Friday evening, delivering an outstanding performance against Gombe Utd with a convincing 2-0 victory in the Nigeria Premier Football League Match Day 24 engagement in Benin.
Sarki Ismael scored a brace, ending the Benin Arsenal's goal drought since the second round of the season. Ismael's goals seemed divine as the hardworking striker opened scoring for Insurance in the 7th minute after receiving a through pass from Osaghae Junior, rounding Gombe Goalkeeper Itodo Akor, and slotting it into the empty net conveniently.
Determined to quench their thirst for victory after four disappointments, Sarki capitalized on a fine pass from Chisom Okereke, burying it into the left corner of the net, making his side comfortable within the first 30 minutes of play. This secured Insurance's first win since the resumption of the second round of the league.
Despite facing strong challenges and threats from opponents, Gombe's Yusuf Taiye and Valentine Egiga, the Benin Arsenals emerged victorious. Defenders Hussaini Abdullahi, Ebuka Akonbudu, and leader Sunday Anyanwu remained solid throughout.
Bendel Insurance suffered a 1-0 defeat at Sporting Lagos on the second-round resumption, drew 0-0 with Enyimba, and faced double away losses to Shooting Stars (1-0) and Plateau Utd (2-0). After 24 matches, they now have 34 points and will be guests to Akwa Utd on Wednesday in the Match Day 25 fixture.
In a post-match interview, Assistant Coach Greg Ikhenoba, standing in for Coach Monday Odigie, praised the team for their convincing 2-0 victory and thanked Odigie for the confidence placed in him during the absence.
Coach Ikhenoba highlighted that there is room for improvement in the team, stating that they will continue working on areas of weakness before their next game.
