The second round of African qualifying for the Women's Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024 is underway with first-leg matches taking place across the continent. As Africa's journey towards the tournament in Paris gains momentum, football fans eagerly anticipate thrilling encounters.
The competition now includes the four African representatives from the FIFA Women's World Cup, raising intrigue about who will secure coveted spots in Paris. This qualifying phase, running from October 25th to October 31st, features Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia, who represented Africa in the previous World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Since the Women's Olympic Football Tournament's debut in Atlanta 1996, five African countries have participated, namely Cameroon, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. With two spots for the 2024 Paris edition up for grabs, CAF's representatives will be determined in April 2024. The focus is now on countries that played at the recent World Cup.
In one fixture, Nigeria, the only African nation to have participated in the Women's Olympic Tournament three times, prepares to face Ethiopia. The Super Falcons, who reached the last 16 stage in the 2023 Women's World Cup, are eager to regain their scoring form against Ethiopia, a team yet to qualify for a major global competition.
Reigning African champions South Africa will take on Congo DR in another exciting match. South Africa's Banyana Banyana, with two prior Olympic appearances, hope to continue their journey. Strikers like Hildah Magaia and Thembi Kgatlana are expected to lead the attack against Congo DR, who are pursuing their first Olympic ticket.
Lastly, Namibia and Morocco face off in a contest where both teams seek their first Olympic qualification. Morocco, buoyed by a successful Women's World Cup debut, is the favored side, carrying newfound confidence from their impressive global performance.
