African Football League's Prize Money Breakdown and Anticipated TV Deals

Posted : 04 October 2023
The African Football League recently disclosed its prize money distribution, solidifying its position as the most lucrative football competition on the African continent.

The total prize money amounts to an impressive $9.7 million and will be distributed among the winners, runners-up, and the third and fourth-placed teams (further details outlined below). While the prize money may have been adjusted from the initial figure of $100 million, the current prize pool, given the scope of the competition (nearly $10 million for six games involving eight teams), is a testament to the competition's financial strength, defying skeptics.

In fact, the prize money awarded to the winner of the African Football League places it on par with the current prize money for the Asian Football Confederation’s Champions League (although the AFC has declared an increase in the winner’s prize money from $4 million to $12 million starting in 2024).

The much-anticipated competition is set to commence on October 20th, featuring 🇹🇿 Tanzania’s Simba FC hosting 🇪🇬 Egypt’s Al Ahly.

An interesting and somewhat underpublicized detail is the partnership with Italian sportswear apparel company Macron, now a listed sponsor of the AFL. Observant viewers may have noticed their logo on the sidelines during the RWC, as they serve as the technical partner of World Rugby. Previously, Macron was the official sponsor for the national teams of Sudan and Comoros during the AFCON.

The forthcoming major revelation concerning the African Football League that all enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating revolves around the television broadcasting deals.
