AFCON Qualifying Victory Allows Nigeria to Relax a Bit, But Victor Osimhen Needs Support Up Front

Following their 1-0 victory over Guinea Bissau in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Monday night, Nigeria's players were a reserved group, but they could exhale with ease.
The Super Eagles were defeated by Bissau in the opening match last Friday, so the Nigerians needed a victory to stay on track. However, the victory was far from convincing, and Victor Osimhen appeared to be the only player in form on the field.
Moses Simon's penalty-kick conversion on the half-hour mark, which came around the same time Mama Balde's goal for Guinea Bissau three days earlier, served as atonement.
The Super Eagles' victory brought them back to the top of the standings and put them one victory away from securing a spot in the Ivory Coast tournament, but it also raised a lot of concerns about the team's current status under Jose Peseiro.
In response to some of the Friday's performances, the Portuguese coach made five changes to the starting lineup, including the introduction of a brand-new central defensive pairing due to Kevin Akpoguma's injury.
The Super Eagles controlled possession as the opposition tried to catch the Nigerians on the break, just like in the first game.
Similar to the first game, the Nigerians had a ton of chances, but it took Bright Osayi-Samuel to drive into the area, get tackled, and win a penalties that Simon converted easily.
