AFCON Qualifying: Salah Scores for Egypt as Senegal Advance to the Finals

Posted : 11 April 2023
Following victories on the road in the qualifiers on Tuesday, defending champions Senegal, Burkina Faso, South Africa, and Tunisia added their names to the list of teams that have qualified for the African Cup of Nations finals the following year.

Senegal, who won the competition in Cameroon around 14 months ago, defeated Mozambique 1-0 away to maintain their perfect record and claim first place in Group L, while Burkina Faso only needed a point away against Togo in a 1-1 draw for them to advance from Group B.

South Africa eked off a 2-1 victory over Liberia on the road to join Morocco, which advanced from Group K last week without kicking a ball.
With Haithem Jouini's lone goal against Libya's neighbors in Benghazi, Tunisia secured a top-two finish in Group J. Angry home supporters threw a variety of bottles onto the field in the final 10 minutes, turning the field into what appeared to be a battleground.

Along with the hosts, Ivory Coast, Algeria is the other nation to have qualified, and they did so on Monday by defeating Niger.
Egypt defeated Malawi 4-0 behind a goal from Mohamed Salah to grab the Group D lead, but Cameroon suffered a humiliating loss to Namibia on the road.
Tuesday's winners, which included the Gambia, Uganda, the Cape Verde Islands, and Equatorial Guinea, all advanced to the next round.

With a late goal from defender Omar Colley, Gambia defeated Mali 1-0 to maintain their chance at qualifying once more. They made it to the quarterfinals at the most recent championships in Cameroon thanks to their first performance.
