AFCON 2023: Thunders of Equatorial Guinea score four to defeat African Wild Dog of Guinea Bissau

The ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Thursday produced the first hat trick, scored by Emilio Nsue of the National Thunder of Equatorial Guinea at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan.


The African Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau, after the 4-2 demolition, however, became the first country to exit the competition after losing two consecutive matches.


Emilio Nsue's goals also mark the first-ever hat trick for Equatorial Guinea in the history of the games.

Emilio Nsue scored in the 21st minute, netted the 3rd goal for the Thunder in the 51st minute, and sealed their victory in the 61st minute. Initially flagged offside, VAR overturned the decision.


Additionally, FC Arges Pitesti's Esteban Orozco Fernandez mistakenly pushed the ball into his own net in the 37th minute.


Guinea Bissau scored a consolation goal in the 90+3rd minute when Jose Correia, known as Ze Turbo. Initially called offside by the Linesman, VAR later ruled it as a valid goal.


Guinea Bissau is making its 4th appearance at the AFCON finals, never advancing beyond the Group stages in 2017, 2019, and 2021. Their highest win was a 7-2 victory against the Squirrels of Benin Republic in Bamako on November 3, 2001. The highest defeat occurred in Banjul, Gambia, where the Scorpions stung them 1-0 on December 1, 1997.


In Guinea Bissau's last five matches, they lost to Nigeria on January 19, 2022, on home soil (0-2) in an AFCON duel, lost to Djibouti by a lone goal on November 20, 2023, in a World Cup match, played a 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso in another World Cup match on November 17, 2023, lost to Guinea by a lone goal in a friendly on October 13, 2023, and defeated Sierra Leone 2-1 in an ACN match but lost to Mali 2-6 on January 6, 2024, in a Friendly. Guinea Bissau had beaten Nigeria’s Super Eagles 1-0 on March 24, 2023, in Nigeria with the goal scored by Balde in the 29th minute.


Equatorial Guinea is ranked 88th and appearing for the 4th time, co-hosting with Gabon in 2015 with a no-show performance, but hosting in 2015 and finishing 4th in Malabo after losing via penalty kicks 2-4, with the real match ending goalless against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
