Former African champions, the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, have been eliminated from the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 after a goalless draw with Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
The 2004 African Cup of Nations champions, the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, were stunned at Coulibaly Stadium as they were ousted from the championship in Ivory Coast by the Bayana Bayana of South Africa, who rose at a vital time to secure a goalless draw with them in the Group E decider.
The game was even statistically, as both teams struggled to score, but their arsenals fired blanks. The Tunisians wore sad expressions, knowing that they were out of the competition.
South Africa has never defeated Tunisia, as the Carthage Eagles won the two previous matches, incidentally in the AFCON games. Tunisia won 2-0 on January 26, 2006, and 3-1 on January 27, 2008.
The Eagles of Mali surprisingly also played to a goalless draw with the Taifa Stars of Namibia in another Group E match played simultaneously at Stade de San Pedro.
It was the seventh successive qualification for the Eagles of Mali in the knockout stages.
