AFCON 2023 qualifiers: Guinea Bissau dislodges Super Eagles from Group A

Posted : 15 June 2023
Guinea Bissau on Wednesday, temporarily claimed the leadership of the Group A standings of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers ahead of the Super Eagles after a slim 1-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe.

The country is however on the verge of sealing a place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with the win, which means Nigeria must beat Sierra Leone on Sunday.

The Djurtus (Wild Dogs) of Guinea Bissau now have 10 points above the Super Eagles of  Nigeria with nine points to the second position with a game in hand.

The Super Eagles will have to fight away at Sierra Leone to grind a win if they want to reclaim the top position.

A draw will only give the Super Eagles the edge on goal difference, thanks to the massive 10-0 defeat inflicted on Sao Tome and Principe last year June.

A win over Sierra Leone will be a ticket clincher for both Nigeria and Guinea Bissau as Sierra Leone will authomatically be out of contention.

Sierra Leone’s loss to Nigeria will mean their obtainable point cannot go beyond eight.

In the Wednesday’s duel, substitute Zinho Gano scored the solitary goal for Guinea Bissau in a cagy match, but it was enough to hand them a ticket to next year’s extravaganza in Cote d’Ivoire.

The first half didn’t have many clear cut chances, with Mama Balde having several opportunities, but he couldn’t find a shot on target.

He had an effort from close range but couldn’t catch a clean shot, while his best opportunity was with an overhead kick from inside the area, but it couldn’t land on target.

In the second half, the Djurtus stepped up their efforts and it paid off in the 55th minute, when Gano, who had just come on as a substitute pounced on to the ball from close range after the Sao Tome keeper spilled a shot from Eucidalcio Gomes.

With the goal, Guinea Bissau were more comfortable and they commanded most of the possession, but couldn’t add a second goal. Gomes had some chances, but none was strong enough to change the score.

The Guinea Bissau side will play Sierra Leone in their final group match.
