Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro dismissed the notion that Nigeria is the favorite against Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals. Despite being the bookmakers' pick, Peseiro sees both teams as equals and believes each has an equal chance of victory in their first-ever AFCON encounter on February 2 at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.
As the three-time AFCON winners, Nigeria is considered a formidable force, but Peseiro emphasized that the match is the second final for his squad, with the Round-of-16 victory over Cameroon being the first. Expressing confidence in his team, Peseiro highlighted the importance of approaching the game against Angola with a mindset focused on scoring goals and enduring challenges, considering it as their second final.
Peseiro stated during his pre-match press conference that the specific match against Angola is evenly poised, with a 50% chance for each team. He emphasized the need to start the game with a clean slate, beginning at 0-0, and the desire to secure victory in this crucial encounter.
Despite the elimination of tournament favorites like Morocco, Senegal, Algeria, and Egypt, Nigeria stands as the highest-ranked team among the remaining eight, while Angola holds the lowest ranking. Peseiro's approach reflects a determined and cautious mindset as the Super Eagles aim to progress in the AFCON tournament.
