AFCON 2023: Bafana Bafana of South Africa's 4-0 drubbing of the Brave Warriors sends tongues wagging

Posted : 23 January 2024

The Bafana Bafana of South Africa on Sunday at the Amadou Coulibali Stadium in Korhogo recorded the highest scoreline with a clean sheet over the Brave Warrior of Namibia. It was a complete annihilation, as Bafana Bafana not only got the highest scoreline but also dominated possession with an unbelievable scoreline of 4-0 in an outstanding Group E match to close the second round matches of the AFCON 23 tournament.

The victory brings back the memory of what Benny McCarthy and his colleagues did to Namibia in their regional COSAFA match on June 5, 2018, which ended 4-1 to the Mandela Boys. South Africa concluded the victory in the first half and turned the second half into a practise game, experimenting with some new boys as new legs were brought into the match.

Percy Tau, who missed a penalty against Mali in the first group game, stepped up for a penalty in the 14th minute and kicked it with the left footer to the bottom corner of the net for South Africa’s first goal in the tournament. After opening the floodgate of goals, Mamelodi Sundowns player Themba Zwane added a brace (two goals in a match) in the 25th and 40th minutes to silence the technical bench of the Brave Warriors.

Zwane thus becomes the first South African player to score a brace in the AFCON finals. While Namibia was trying to recover from the shock, substitute Thapelo Maseko of Mamelodi Sundowns, who came in for the 'Man of the Match' Themba Zwane, scored in the 75th minute.

However, Mali still leads Group E with 4 points, scoring 3 goals and conceding 1; South Africa climbed to the 2nd position with 3 points, 4 goals, and 2 goals against; Namibia also has 3 points, scored only one goal, and conceded 4 goals to place 3rd; while Tunisia sits uncomfortably on the bottom with a point, 1 goal for and 2 against.

Group E's last matches will be played simultaneously on Wednesday at 6 p.m. between Namibia and Mali, and the other match will be South Africa versus Tunisia.
