AC Milan unveils plans for new 70,000-seat stadium, departing from San Siro

Posted : 27 September 2023
AC Milan has unveiled ambitious plans to depart from their historic San Siro home and construct a new 70,000-seat stadium in the southern part of the city. The club has submitted initial proposals to the city council, targeting the suburb of San Donato for this grand project.

San Siro has served as Milan's iconic stadium since 1926, but it has remained largely unchanged since the 1990 World Cup. AC Milan and their city rivals Inter share the stadium as joint tenants, and numerous attempts to modernize it have fallen short.

In August, a local heritage commission designated the stadium as having "cultural interest," preventing its demolition and compelling both clubs to seek alternatives.

AC Milan's plans extend beyond just a stadium; they aim to establish a club headquarters, hotel, club shop, and museum at the new site. Paolo Scaroni, the chairman, expressed the club's commitment to creating one of the world's premier stadiums and securing a prosperous future.

The San Siro, officially known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, is renowned worldwide for its distinctive red girders and spiral towers. However, the interior facilities have remained basic and are in dire need of renovation. The costs associated with refurbishing the existing stadium are substantial, leading Inter and AC Milan to explore alternative options over the years.

In 2021, the two clubs jointly announced plans for a new 60,000-seat stadium on the current site, commonly referred to as 'The Cathedral.' Nevertheless, protests, legal challenges, and objections caused the project to stall, and the recent heritage commission's decision has ruled out the possibility of demolishing the existing stadium.

Following AC Milan's lead, Inter is also considering constructing their own stadium at a different location, with a site in Assago, a small town south of Milan, currently under evaluation.
