Samuel Chukwueze scored twice to lead AC Milan to a dominant 6-1 win over Serie B leaders Sassuolo in the Italian Cup on Tuesday, securing a spot in the quarterfinals. Milan's impressive performance continued their unbeaten run to seven games across all competitions, following a rocky start to the season under new coach Paulo Fonseca.
The seven-time European champions are now eyeing their first Italian Cup title since 2003 and only their sixth overall.
Chukwueze opened the scoring for Milan in the 12th minute, tapping in after his initial shot hit the post. Milan quickly doubled their lead when Tijjani Reijnders struck a brilliant shot from outside the box following a loose ball.
Sassuolo struggled to contain the attacking force of the hosts, and Milan made it 3-0 in the 21st minute when Chukwueze completed his brace, finishing off a pass from Tammy Abraham. Just two minutes later, Rafael Leao scored Milan’s fourth after a well-placed pass from Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
With the match well in hand, Fonseca rotated his squad at halftime, resting key players such as Leao and Loftus-Cheek. Milan added a fifth goal in the 56th minute when Davide Calabria netted his first goal of the season.
Sassuolo managed to grab a consolation goal through Samuele Mulattieri, but Abraham responded with a back-heel finish to seal Milan's victory and his fourth goal since joining the club on loan from Roma.
In other Italian Cup action, Bologna secured a 4-0 win over Monza to advance to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season. The two-time Cup winners dominated the first half with two goals in quick succession from Tommaso Pobega and Riccardo Orsolini.
Monza, struggling in Serie A's relegation zone, could not respond, and Bologna put the game out of reach in the 63rd minute when Benjamin Dominguez scored. Dominguez later assisted Santiago Castro for a fourth goal to complete the dominant performance.
