AC Milan’s hopes of securing a Champions League spot suffered another setback with a 2-1 defeat at Bologna on Thursday. The loss leaves Milan in eighth place, trailing fourth-placed Juventus by eight points.
The rescheduled fixture, initially postponed due to heavy rain and flooding in Emilia-Romagna, saw Milan take the lead just before halftime through Rafael Leao. However, they struggled to maintain control after the break, allowing Bologna to stage a comeback.
Bologna equalized early in the second half when Santiago Castro forced home a Giovanni Fabbian knockdown, though Milan protested for a possible handball. The visitors failed to respond effectively, and Bologna capitalized on a defensive lapse to score the winner in the 82nd minute.
Nicolo Cambiaghi outmaneuvered Alex Jimenez before delivering a precise low cross for Dan Ndoye to tap in, securing all three points for the home side. Bologna’s victory moves them above Milan into sixth place, narrowing the gap to Juventus to five points.
Despite the setback, Milan remains hopeful of a turnaround, with Leao insisting they must keep winning and wait for others to slip up. However, with time running out, their upcoming home match against Lazio on Sunday could be their final chance to stay in contention for a top-four finish. The seven-time European champions now face an uphill battle to secure a place in next season’s elite competition.
