AC Milan defeated Serie A rivals Napoli in an action-packed match to advance to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since winning the tournament in 2007. Milan may meet Inter Milan in the last four since their city rivals are down 2-0 going into Wednesday's second leg.
The eventual Serie A champions Napoli dominated the opening stages, but Milan gained a penalty with one of their first efforts. Olivier Giroud's subsequent penalty kick was saved by Alex Meret.
However, the seasoned Frenchman scored the first goal to make it 2-0 overall when he tapped in after Rafael Leao's spectacular 70-yard run to set him up.
When Fikayo Tomori handled in the box, Napoli was given a chance to get back into the game, but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's penalty was saved by the opposing goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
With only a few seconds left in the game, they did manage to score thanks to a Victor Osimhen header, but there was not enough time to set up another opportunity.
With 39 attempts in two legs, Napoli, who are 22 points ahead of Milan in the standings, have lost their rhythm at a crucial time and missed several opportunities.
