AC Milan secured a crucial 4-0 victory over Udinese on Friday, keeping their hopes of European qualification alive, but the match was marred by an unfortunate incident involving goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Milan, who are still in ninth place but four points behind sixth-placed Lazio, saw goals from Rafael Leao, Strahinja Pavlovic, Theo Hernandez, and Tijjani Reijnders.
However, the game took a concerning turn when Maignan collided heads with his teammate Alex Jimenez while attempting to clear a ball, resulting in Maignan being stretchered off the field.
The incident occurred shortly after Milan had established a 2-0 lead through Leao and Pavlovic’s goals just before halftime. As Maignan rushed out of his goal early in the second half, he clashed with Jimenez, causing a sickening head injury.
Milan reported that Maignan was conscious and being taken to the hospital for further examination after the collision. Jimenez, on the other hand, was able to continue playing despite the frightening incident.
The match was further complicated by unsportsmanlike behavior from some of Udinese's supporters, who had previously booed Maignan as he approached the goal and hurled offensive chants. This was a grim reminder of a similar incident in January of the previous year, when Maignan had been racially abused by a small group of Udinese fans.
The club later identified and banned those responsible for the abuse. Despite these challenges, Milan held their focus, with the victory keeping them in the hunt for a spot in European competitions.
