Abia Warriors FC on Sunday escaped unscathed as the visiting Niger Tornadoes attempted to dislodge them at the Umuahia Township Stadium in Aba.
The visitors, Ikon Allah Boys, managed to push the hosts, Umu Chineke, to a last-minute penalty for a consolation goal, but Abia Warriors held on to secure a slim victory.

The 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match between Abia Warriors FC and the visiting Niger Tornadoes could have ended with a two-goal margin for the hosts. However, the visitors pulled one back in the 95th minute after an Abia Warriors player was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty that was successfully converted.
Abia Warriors FC opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Anthony Ijoma unleashed a powerful long-range shot from outside the box, catching the Niger Tornadoes goalkeeper off guard.
Umu Chineke Boys doubled their lead in the 56th minute. Ernest Onyeka’s initial shot hit the crossbar after he received a pass, turned, and fired a shot. The rebound fell kindly, and it was eventually slotted into the net to make it 2-0.
Niger Tornadoes, seeking a way back into the game, resorted to a high-pressing strategy, which finally paid off in the dying moments.
Their consolation goal came in the 95th minute when an Abia Warriors player handled the ball inside the box, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Ahmed Family stepped up and converted to reduce the deficit, ending the game 2-1.
With this result, Abia Warriors have moved to 11th place on the NPFL table with 21 points.
