9 youngsters recruited to Insurance, Edo Queens after Edo Governor’s Cup competition

Posted : 30 April 2023
At least nine young players seen to be outstanding have been listed for recruitment into the Bendel insurance Football Club of Benin  and Edo Queens Women FC.

Edo’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, announced this on Friday after the final match of the maiden Edo Governor’s Cup football tournament at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.

The football tournament was part of the activities to observe the 2023 Education Week in the state.

Shaibu pointed out that the football event was part of plans to revive sports in the state, especially through the discovery of young talents.

“We have identified more than nine players from the teams which played today (Friday), who are potential players for Bendel Insurance and Edo Queen Football Clubs.

“What we want to achieve is to catch them young at the grassroots and one important thing about the Education Week is showcasing not just the knowledge but also that which is beyond the knowledge.

“There is a need for physical well-being.

“So, we are using their physical mentality to stabilise their academic pursuit.

“We have decided that a knowledge-driven economy must be followed with digital learning and that is what we are giving the schools.

“Watching these young ones today with their style of football, education is reflected and by the grace of God, we are seeing a new generation of young men and women who will not only do well in education but also do well in sports.

“At the end of the day, what we want to achieve is for them not to just be medical doctors, lawyers, but some of them will represent this country in various sports.

”In the end, they will return to their profession they studied in school,” he said.

Meanwhile, Idia College and Benin Technical College emerged winners of the secondary school football tournaments in the female and male categories respectively.

Idia College humiliated Usugbenu Technical College 7-0, while Benin Technical College defeated Ogbona Secondary School 2-1 to take the honours in the categories.

In her remarks, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Joan Osa-Oviawe, said the football competition was to highlight the values Edo government placed on sports development.

“Last year we were placed on a marching order to restart sports activities in our schools.

”That is why every Wednesday is designed for sports activities across the state, and Fridays for extra-curricular activities.

“We wanted to make today the day for our students to come and showcase their talents,” said Osa-Oviawe.
