Kano Pillars Football Club has their legendary 43-year-old goal poacher, Rabi'u Ali, aka Pele, to thank for his last-ditch solo goal, earning them a well-deserved win and saving the blushes of Sai Masu Gida against the rampaging 2022 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions, Rivers United FC.
The last-minute goal secured maximum points for the Kano outfit against Rivers United FC on Match Day 4 of the ongoing 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League season at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, Kano.
The legendary Rabi'u Ali broke the deadlock at 90+3 minutes, after the center referee, Musibahudeen Ibrahim from Ebonyi state, added five minutes to round up the game.
Rabi'u Ali's goal restored the confidence of the thousands of supporters who filled the 20,000-capacity Sani Abacha Stadium in Kofar Mata, Kano. He capitalized on a mix-up among the Rivers United Football Club defenders inside the box in the game's closing minutes.
In a post-match interview, the Sai Masu Gida Coach, Abdu Maikaba, described the encounter as a good and memorable game. He noted that the victory would be remembered for a long time, given the circumstances that led to it.
Coach Maikaba expressed his delight at securing the victory in the last minutes, making it particularly sweet for the players, the technical crew, and the entire Kano Pillars FC family. He also acknowledged the need to work on the team's goal-scoring issues, despite the numerous chances created during the early minutes of the game.
Coach Maikaba commended his players for withstanding Rivers United FC's theatrics, describing the visitors as a strong team, especially since they are the only Nigerian team remaining in this year's CAF Confederation Cup.
Kano Pillars FC goalkeeper, Galadima Muhammad, was voted as the Man of the Match by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) members who covered the match, in recognition of his outstanding performance.
In his remarks, Galadima Muhammad dedicated the Man of the Match award to the players, the technical crew, and the entire Kano Pillars FC family.
Sai Masu Gida will face Enugu Rangers International Football Club in Enugu for Match Day 5 next week.
