In a desperate move to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has traveled to London to meet Arsenal's highly-rated forward, Ethan Nwaneri, in an attempt to convince him to join the Nigerian senior national team.
Nwaneri is a British footballer of Nigerian heritage who plays for Arsenal Football Club as a right winger or attacking midfielder.
The 18-year-old Nwaneri, born on March 21, 2007, in Enfield, England, joined Arsenal FC as an academy player at the age of eight.
He made his Premier League debut against Brentford FC on September 18, 2022, becoming the youngest player to appear in the top flight of English football at 15 years and 181 days.
Nwaneri had his first experience in England's national colors when he was named in the squad for the 2023 UEFA European Under-17 Championship on May 17, 2023.
He then went on to score the winning goal in the opening match against Croatia at Balmazújvárosi Városi Sportpálya.
On his 18th birthday, March 21, 2025, Nwaneri made his England U-21 debut as a substitute during a 5-3 defeat to France. Just three days later, he scored his first goal for England U-21 in his first full start, securing a 4-2 victory against Portugal.
Having built such an impressive résumé, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is set to have a crucial discussion with Nwaneri as he looks to begin rebuilding his team.
Chelle is keen to shape his squad ahead of upcoming crucial matches, having had a mixed experience in his first two games as Super Eagles manager.
"Chelle will meet with Nwaneri in London this week," a source said.
"I am optimistic that he (Nwaneri) will recognize that he has greater prospects playing for the Super Eagles than the Three Lions," the source added.
"The Super Eagles’ central defense needs urgent reinforcement," he continued. "Even the midfield requires a major overhaul as quickly as possible.
"Football belongs to the youth.
"As it stands, the coach must begin a systematic process of replacing the older players."
