The 2023 Federation Cup champions have been paired against the little-known NLO team, Dandidi Babes FC from Jigawa State, in the Round of 64 of this year's FA Cup, which is already in progress.
The coach Greg Ikhenoba-managed Bendel Insurance had to fly from Owerri, Imo State capital, on Monday morning to meet the challenge of landing in Lafia, Nasarawa State, to settle down for the FA Cup match against Dandidi Babes after their slim defeat to Abia Warriors on Sunday evening in Match Day 29 of the Nigeria Premier Football League in Umuahia.
The Benin Arsenals and Jigawa's Dandidi Babes FC are meeting for the first time. The Round of 64 engagement is scheduled to take place at the Lafia City Stadium in Nasarawa State.
Insurance, who recently fought their way out of the relegation zone in the NPFL and are now comfortably in 9th position on the league table, will no doubt come all out against the underdogs, knowing that the FA Cup is the sure way to secure a continental ticket, as they did in 2023 when they, against all odds, defeated Rangers Intl 1-0 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, to lift the cup for the 4th time.
Speaking ahead of the FA Cup Round 64 tie, the captain of the Benin Arsenals, Meyiwa Oritseweyinmi, said that the team was in high spirits and eager to make up for the 1-0 loss to Abia Warriors on Sunday.
"We know that the Federation Cup is a different ballgame, but we are not going to leave any stone unturned tomorrow in Lafia. We got the Confederation Cup ticket in 2023 through the FA Cup, so we are not going to take it lightly. We are treating it like a final game.
"We know the task ahead; nobody wants to lose. We are not even happy with our position in the league, so the FA Cup provides the opportunity to be among the best in the country, and we are ready to seize it. Amateur sides are always difficult, but we will not relent," Meyiwa said.
