2025 President FA Cup: Rangers Int'l FC stops Great Achievers

Posted : 13 February 2025

Perennial Enugu State F.A Cup winners and six-time national champions of the oldest club competition in the country, Rangers International F.C., secured a dominant 3-0 victory over high-flying Great Achievers FC of Emene, Enugu, in an explosive semi-final encounter of the 2025 Enugu State F.A/President Federation Cup at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium midweek.

The match, witnessed by an appreciative crowd, saw the state league champions, led by coach Onyeukwu Michael, push for an early goal but face stiff resistance from the backline of the reigning NPFL champions.

After some missed opportunities, the ‘Flying Antelopes’ broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when young midfield dynamo Daniel Onyia volleyed home from the edge of the box. His goal came off an assist from Amobi Ezeaku, who leaped high to challenge the opponent’s goalkeeper and headed the ball down for Onyia to finish.

To their credit, the state league champions did not sit back but pressed forward in search of an equalizer. However, a spectacular display from Somto Nnamani, who guarded the goal for the Emene side, prevented them from conceding more. Despite his heroics, Rangers extended their lead in the 43rd minute when left-back Evans Ogbonde rifled home the second goal after receiving an assist from Isaac Saviour.

Substitute Frank Uwumiro sealed the victory in the 73rd minute, stabbing in the third goal after an incisive defense-splitting pass from Evans Ogbonde. The opponent’s goalkeeper played a crucial role in keeping the scoreline from escalating before the referee signaled the end of proceedings.

With this victory, Rangers have qualified for the final of the state club competition, where they will face NNL side Ijele FC, who defeated Adoration FC 2-0 in the first semi-final. The win also secures Rangers a ticket to compete in the 2025 National President Federation Cup, where El-Kanemi Warriors FC of Maiduguri are the current champions.
