2025 NWFL: Nasarawa Amazons earn first win over Dannaz Ladies

Posted : 16 January 2025

Shobowale Olushola's long kick in the 90th-minute strike was all Nasarawa Amazons FC needed to kick-start their 2025 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) campaign on a winning note against Dannaz Ladies of Lagos.

The win earned the Solid Miners Ladies the three points at stake in Match Day 1 of the NWFL 2025, which marked the kickoff of the Nigerian women's league.

The game started at about 4:05 p.m., and the Nasarawa Amazons team was solid, holding on high with expectations.

The high hopes were met when Odoh Bibiana opened the scoring for the Lafia-based side in the 33rd minute of play.

Nasarawa Amazons goalkeeper Unachukwu Udoka left no stone unturned as she made crucial saves to keep her team safe from defeat, with the first half ending 0-0.

Both teams returned for the second half looking more aggressive, with high hopes of scoring goals.

Nasarawa Amazons added more bite to the game in the second half, determined to win as is customary, but no goals came from either side—Nasarawa Amazons or Dannaz Ladies.

However, in the 90th minute, a well-executed play from our wonderful and highly rated midfielder, Shobowale Olushola, resulted in the winning goal. The match ended 1-0 at full-time.

Coach Bashir Fatai of Dannaz Ladies said that his team was the youngest in the NWFL.

"We paraded the youngest team in the league last season, but today, we are happy with their play.

"We have come to play against one of the best teams, handled by the best coach in the women's league.

"With this result, I believe we won against Nasarawa Amazons."

Coach Olaoye Micheal, the assistant coach of Nasarawa Amazons, said the team is a work in progress.

"We played better; in every first match, there is anxiety. Goal-scoring is something we will work on, and I know that in subsequent matches, we will focus more on goal-scoring during our training sessions.

"Dannaz Ladies are not a bad side, but we need to score goals. We will come out stronger in our subsequent matches.

"We want to qualify for the Super Six, and from there, we will know where we’re headed," he said.

Nasarawa Amazons will travel to Umuahia for the NWFL Match Day 2 game against Abia Angels.
