2025 NWFL Match Day 3: Rivers Angels end FC Robo winning streak

Posted : 30 January 2025

Rivers Angels delivered a stellar performance on Wednesday, ending the high-flying FC Robo Queens' winning streak with a commanding 4-2 victory in the 2025 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Match Day 3 fixture.

The emphatic win cemented Rivers Angels' superiority and propelled them to the top of Group B.

Coming into the match, Rivers Angels had accumulated four points from their first two games, securing a 2-1 victory over Ibom Angels and a 1-1 draw with Naija Ratels FC.

FC Robo, on the other hand, arrived in Port Harcourt with momentum, having won their previous two encounters against Adamawa Queens and Benue Queens.

The hosts wasted no time asserting themselves, with captain Polinus Ifeoma curling in a sensational free kick in the ninth minute to ignite the home crowd.

However, FC Robo responded swiftly, as Kemi Adegbuyi struck just four minutes later to level the score.

After a closely contested first half, Rivers Angels turned up the heat in the second period.

Barely five minutes in, Aminat Folorunsho latched onto a pinpoint cross from Peace Effiong, volleying home to restore the lead.

Just three minutes later, Ifeoma Ikenokwalu’s powerful free kick took a huge deflection off Fasilat Adeyemo, making it 3-1.

The victory was sealed in the 65th minute when Effiong calmly converted a penalty after Bukola Adegbite fouled Ikenokwalu inside the box.

Adegbite was booked for her protests, but the referee stood firm on the decision.

Twelve minutes before stoppage time, Chidinma Ogbuchi scored from a free kick to reduce the deficit for FC Robo.

The visitors mounted a late charge, but the damage had already been done, as the Garden City side held firm to secure all three points.

This latest victory adds to Rivers Angels’ impressive record against FC Robo, having previously defeated them 2-1 in Lagos.

Now, with a 4-2 win at home, the Pride of Rivers have sent a clear message to the rest of the league.

With this result, Rivers Angels move one point clear of the Lagos Landladies at the summit of NWFL Group B, further strengthening their Super Six ambition.
