Imo state's representatives, Heartland Queens, will confront the Bayelsa state-based team, Golden Sun Sports Club, on Thursday, May 9, 2024, aiming for a spot in the round of 16 of the prestigious President Federation Cup.
The round of 32 match will take place at the Mainbowl of the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta state. This encounter will mark the first competitive meeting between the experienced Heartland Queens and the grassroots side from Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.
While Heartland Queens bring a wealth of experience as perennial Cup holders in their state, Golden Sun are two-time runners-up in Bayelsa and current champions of the Bayelsa Governor's Cup Football Tournament, known as the 'Prosperity Cup.'
Heartland Queens reached the quarterfinals in 2022 but were defeated by Delta Queens, the reigning Nigerian league champions, while Lakeside Queens halted their title aspirations in the round of 16 in the 2023 edition.
Despite their previous successes, Heartland Queens must approach the match against Golden Sun with caution, considering the potential for upsets in the Federation Cup.
Bookmakers have already tipped Heartland Queens to advance to the round of 16, where they could face Premiership giants FC Robo Queens.
Heartland Queens are also among the top six teams competing for the league crown at the NWFL Premiership Super Six, with the chance to represent the country at the CAF Women's Champions League.
The Federation Cup is known for its surprises, and Golden Sun, with their pedigree as vice champions of the Bayelsa FA Cup, pose a threat. Heartland Queens must take this challenge seriously and avoid underestimating their opponents.
A victory for Heartland Queens would be a fitting tribute to the newly appointed Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, and the supportive governor, Dist. Sen. Hope Uzodinma, as well as the people of Imo state.
