2024 President FA Cup Round of 16: Edo Queens, Rivers Angels in grudge mission

Less than 24 hours remain until the reigning champions of the Nigeria Women's Football League (NWFL) Premiership, Edo Queens FC of Benin, renew their domestic rivalry against top-flight side Rivers Angels FC of Port Harcourt in the round of 16 game of the President Federation Cup title hunt at the Awka Township Stadium in Anambra state.


The newly crowned champions of the NWFL Super Six for the 2023/24 season will enter the encounter with vigor, force, and determination, given that both teams have been long-time rivals in the annals of the Nigeria Women's Football League (NWFL) since its inception.


Edo Queens and Rivers Angels have met several times in competitive football. There has been a long-running football battle of supremacy between both teams. These two NWFL giants participated in the just-concluded NWFL Super Six, where the red-hot ladies from Benin City were crowned champions.


This is another opportunity for the women's football giants in the land to prove themselves. The President Federation Cup is the oldest football fiesta in Nigeria. So it wouldn't be out of place to say that tomorrow's match between Edo Queens FC and Rivers Angels FC is likely to be the biggest showpiece of the Round of 16 of the FA Cup.


Following the just-concluded Super Six, Moses Aduku's tutored girls from Edo State would like to capitalize on the scintillating performance exhibited at the Super Six to assert their authority as reigning champions.


Edo Queens reached the semifinals in the 2023 edition played at the Awka Township Stadium but were edged out by Bayelsa Queens FC by a lone goal in a controversial defeat that sparked controversy among football fans, questioning the capability and competency of some Nigerian match officials to handle sensitive matches of such magnitude.


This is going to be a different ball game as the Queens from the Benin Kingdom are battle-ready to showcase football artistry and professionalism. They are set to give their opponents a run for their money. For both sides, it is definitely going to be a grudge match.
