2024 Optima Energy Gold Cup: Shooting Stars beat ASVO FC

Posted : 24 August 2024

Ten-man Shooting Stars edged out Benin Premier League’s Association Sportive de la Vallée de l'Ouémé (ASVO) FC with a lone goal in the second semi-final of the Optima Energy Gold Cup.

The Oluyole Warriors will now set up an epic clash with the defending champions, Beyond Limits.

In the 15th minute, Shooting Stars could have taken the lead, but Taiye Muritala failed to convert Aliyu Abubakar’s good delivery into the box.

Ten minutes later, ASVO FC’s goalkeeper Douyeme Batori was forced to make a reflex save from an effort by Anthony Okachi.

At the half-hour mark, Douyeme Batori denied Shooting Stars again by pulling off a save from Aliyu Abubakar’s shot on target.

With everything to play for in the second half, Anthony Okachi was sent off for a needless challenge on Muri Dagbo, making the game tougher for the Oluyole Warriors.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 64th minute when former Flying Eagles star Ikouwem Utin set up Victor Chukwudi, and the attacking winger made no mistake, putting the ball into the net for the only goal of the game.

Meanwhile, eight teams arrived in Ikenne and Sagamu, four in each location, to compete for the offseason’s biggest accolade—the Optima Energy Gold Cup, which is in its 12th edition.

Each team played three matches in the group stage before half were eliminated. The top two teams from each group battled it out in the semi-finals.

Now, the last four have been reduced to two, as the winners of the semi-finals, Beyond Limits and Shooting Stars, head for the finals scheduled for Saturday at the Remo Stars International Stadium, with kickoff at 3 p.m. local time.
