Posted : 16 September 2024

Team Edo has remained steadfast in both performance and results as they achieved the unexpected on Day 3 of the 2024 National Youth Games, securing a gold medal in swimming through Precious Tissa.

Gold medalist Precious Tissa, who also earned two silver medals on Day 2, finished the 50m breaststroke event in 35 seconds to clinch the gold for Edo.

Day 3 was indeed a day of triumph and blessings for Team Edo, starting with a gold medal in cycling. Divine Ogbe replicated her Day 1 success by winning the gold medal in the 50km road race with a time of 1:21:15:97. Esther Godwin added a bronze in the same event, complementing the silver she won on Day 1.

The winning spirit of Team Edo continued as Treasure Omosivwe secured gold in the high jump with a leap of 162 cm, and Jennifer Osamwengie Efosa took silver in the girls' long jump.

Edo's female rugby team also made headlines by securing gold after defeating Delta on penalties. Earlier, the Edo State male rugby team won bronze by defeating their Kwara counterparts 19-0.

The male cricket team also contributed to Edo’s medal haul.

In Kung Fu, Favour Eboigbe won a bronze medal in the female demonstration, while Godstime Alufa earned a bronze in the male category, keeping Edo in second place on the medal table.

Meanwhile, the football team qualified from Group B along with Delta after a 4-0 victory over Plateau in their second game. Miracle Odion scored first for Edo in the 7th minute, followed by a penalty goal from Dickson Osaro in the 40th minute, making it 2-0. Both players added goals in the 47th and 53rd minutes to secure the win at St. Patrick's Field in Asaba. Edo had previously suffered a 2-1 defeat to Delta in their opening match.

The Edo football team will advance to the semifinals of the competition.
