2024 CAFWCL Qualifiers: Yussuf Alli hails Edo Queens as Team conquers West Africa

Posted : 19 August 2024

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Olympian Yussuf Alli, has expressed his delight in the exceptional performance of Edo Queens Football Club at the CAF Women's Champions League Zone B qualifiers, where they finished at the top of their group with a perfect record.

The Edo Sports Commission boss stated that he was impressed with the girls' achievements in their debut CAF engagement.

Alli, while reacting to the Benin girls' 1-0 victory over Omnisports Etincelle, encouraged the team to maintain the momentum as they face the host team in the semifinals.

"I congratulate our girls. They have been spectacular since they started the CAF Champions League preliminaries in Côte d'Ivoire.

"Our Governor is pleased with their results and performance so far, and he has urged them to keep the momentum and bring the cup to Benin," Alli enthused.

Edo Queens edged out Etincelle 1-0 in the last game of Group B of the WAFU Zone B CAF Champions League qualifiers on Saturday evening to complete their unbeaten run and secure qualification for the semifinals. Joy Jerry's first-half goal sealed the victory for Edo Queens.

The reigning Nigeria Premier League champions began their campaign in faraway Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, with a 5-0 thrashing of AS Garde National of Niger Republic, followed by a 3-0 victory over Hasaacas Ladies from the former Gold Coast – Ghana, in their second group outing.

The 1-0 win over Omnisports Etincelle of Burkina Faso ensured that the Benin girls finished as group winners, ahead of Omnisports Etincelle, who also made it to the semifinals, scheduled for Monday inside Stade De La Paix in Bouaké.

Edo Queens will face Inter D'Abidjan on Tuesday inside Stade De La Paix in Bouaké.
