Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia were crowned champions of the fourth edition of the Betsy Obaseki Women's Football Tournament in Benin City after defeating Bayelsa Queens 6-5 on penalties, following a goalless 90 minutes of play.
Towards the end of the match, both teams adopted a more cautious approach, resulting in a goalless draw.
The game was decided by a penalty shootout, where the Amazons showed greater determination, coming out on top after heroic performances from both goalkeepers.
In the post-match interview, winning coach Christopher Danjuma said: "The feeling is indescribable, to finally win something after numerous attempts.
"We've been trying after coming close on different occasions.
"We told ourselves that we must always stay in the game, no matter what, rather than falling behind. So we attacked with caution, especially in the second half."
"And as for penalties? We've been practicing penalty kicks after every training session because we've been unlucky with penalties in recent seasons."
Bayelsa Queens coach, Whyte Ogbonda, said: "Both teams gave a good account of themselves, but at the end of the day, Nasarawa Amazons won."
"The penalties didn’t go as we planned, but I am proud of how the girls played, especially by not conceding any goals."
The champions, Nasarawa Amazons, were rewarded with a whopping sum of N10,000,000 (ten million Naira) as the winners of the Betsy Obaseki Women's Football Tournament 2024.
The Prosperity Girls were also awarded a cheque for N7,000,000 (seven million Naira) as their reward for finishing second in the competition.
Earlier in the day, the host team, Edo Queens, defeated Heartland Queens of Owerri 4-2 to clinch third place and a cash reward of N5,000,000 (five million Naira).
