It is certainly going to be a titanic clash in the semifinals between top premier league teams and familiar rivals, Heartland Queens and Bayelsa Queens, at the ongoing 2024 Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT) in Benin City, Edo State.
The epic semifinals will take place at the main bowl of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) Sports Centre at 12:00 PM.
Aside from being familiar with each other in competitive and non-competitive games, these top teams will be meeting for the first time in this notable annual preseason tournament, now in its fourth year.
While the former Nigerian champions and third-best club in Africa were the winners of the second edition of the BOWFT, the Owerri team is seeking its first-ever title win.
Prior to Monday's BOWFT semifinal game, the Owerri landladies worked hard to edge out Espoir FC de Cotonou, champions of the Benin Republic Championnat National Feminine, with a 1-0 victory in the quarterfinals. In contrast, the Yenagoa side secured an emphatic 2-0 win against Fortress Ladies, a team from the NWFL Championship.
The Owerri side is likely to maintain the same lineup that has led them to victory in the past four matches, perhaps with minor adjustments and the introduction of a few new players to further strengthen the squad and improve their chances of winning in what is expected to be a challenging game.
The winners of the semifinals will face the winners of the clash between the host state team, Edo Queens, and Nasarawa Amazons in the finals, scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, at the main bowl of Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. The match for the losing teams will take place earlier the same day at Western Boys High School's turf.f
