2024/2025 Season: NPFL Mgt announces improved packages for match officials

Posted : 27 August 2024

The management of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has announced a 50 percent increase in the wages for referees officiating in the league. This substantial raise highlights a significant step toward enhancing the working conditions and compensation for match officials. The move reflects the NPFL’s commitment to valuing the crucial role referees play in ensuring fair play and the smooth operation of matches throughout the season.

Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the NPFL, disclosed these new adjustments to the indemnities for match officials during a press conference in Abuja. Elegbeleye expressed his satisfaction with the decision, which aims to provide a more appropriate level of compensation for referees. This increase is designed not only to recognize their contributions but also to attract and retain qualified professionals in the field of officiating.

In addition to announcing the wage increase, Elegbeleye also stated that all outstanding dues to referees have been paid. This assurance is meant to reassure stakeholders and match officials that the NPFL is financially responsible and committed to honoring its financial obligations. Timely payment of salaries is crucial for maintaining the trust and motivation of officials working in the league.

Furthermore, Elegbeleye mentioned that negotiations are ongoing to secure air transportation for referees and players. Improving travel conditions is another significant step towards enhancing the working environment for both referees and players. Ensuring smooth and efficient travel between match venues is important for maintaining the quality and organization of the league.

The NPFL Chairman also praised a firm that facilitated the payment of referees' and staff wages. This acknowledgment underscores the importance of effective partnerships in managing the league’s finances and how external support can play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of the league.

Additionally, Elegbeleye announced that a payment of 1 billion nairas was received from a media business outfit. This substantial funding contributes to the league’s financial stability and supports future projects. The receipt of this amount signals strong confidence from business partners in the NPFL and their commitment to the growth of football in Nigeria.

Elegbeleye revealed the league's ownership structure: the teams hold 65%, the league itself 10%, GTI 5%, and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) 5%. This distribution outlines the governance and financial framework of the NPFL, highlighting the involvement of various stakeholders in the management and support of the league.
